San Jose del Cabo, Mexico
There are very few places I’ve traveled that don’t leave me wanting more. It’s like there is never enough time, never enough exploring, never enough room in my bags. Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula is one of those places.
This was my second trip to San Jose del Cabo, the more low-key, historic area of the Los Cabos region. End of March, the weather is perfection with warm breezy days and cool, almost chilly nights. It's a very festive and culturally significant season with Fiestas Tradicionales San Jose del Cabo marking the day of San Josè with a week of live music, performances, dancing, food & drink. You could feel the energy and buzz surrounding the town and we ventured into the square of the historic Art District regularly to enjoy it all - and take advantage of the late night shopping.
When ready to escape the hype, the stunning East Cape was only a short drive away. Winding through expansive desert plains, floating down sandy dirt “roads” and arriving to the most delicious sparkling blue water - it is a memory locked into the treasure chest. The isolation, lack of cell reception and very few other humans makes this remote paradise one of my favourite places to spend sunrise to sunset. It feels authentic and off the beaten-path.
The tacos, tequila and mezcal never disappoints and the caliber of restaurants around town continues to impress. But the aesthetic of Baja California is what really inspires me! Taking a stroll through the neighbourhood, turning down the next art district lane, looking out to where desert meets the sea or catching a glimpse of the sun setting over the mountains - the COLOUR this place has to offer is incredible.
It’s the earthy, monochromatic palettes with surprising pops of vibrant contrasting colour. It’s the straight lines and square architecture made by concrete and plaster exteriors, softened by arches, palm trees and bougainvilleas. The mix of materials, weaving together layers of design and hand crafted artisanal work. It’s the yellows and pinks and blues that I just can’t get enough of. It truly is a mosaic of inspiration that I can’t wait to get back to explore more of.
